Can-Cara Limited Champions Affordable Housing with the Completion of Union Acres Development

Can-Cara Limited, in partnership with the National Housing Trust (NHT), the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), and the Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA), proudly unveiled its latest affordable housing development, Union Acres. The project offers two- and one-bedroom units, the first of their kind in this area. Union Acres is a testament to Can-Cara’s longstanding commitment to providing sustainable housing solutions for Jamaicans.

“This is not just about housing but about building communities,” said Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs. “When people care for and protect each other, strong communities are born, and that’s what we’re fostering here at Union Acres.”

At today’s handover ceremony, the importance of homeownership was emphasized not just as a financial achievement, but as a key to creating peace and stability in individuals’ lives. NHT Chairman Linval Freeman, stressed that home ownership helps build stronger communities and personal security.

“[Union Acres] stands as a symbol of how collaboration can manifest real, life-changing results for civil and social workers across Jamaica,” said St Patrice Ennis, President of the JCTU.

Can-Cara’s vision goes beyond simply building homes. The company is committed to creating green spaces and alternative building structures that address climate change. Union Acres incorporates smart home features and renewable energy solutions such as solar panels, reducing the environmental footprint while offering modern amenities to residents.

“We are not just building homes; we are building a future that is sustainable and adaptable to the needs of Jamaicans,” Freeman stated. “By introducing green spaces and smart technologies, Can-Cara ensures that each development plays a role in Jamaica&’s fight against climate change.”

A Commitment to Social Development

The importance of social development was a key theme of the event. Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasized the government’s role in addressing the perception versus perspective on housing. He stated that government-led initiatives, like Union Acres, align with recent public sector wage increases and the broader mission to complete development projects.

“The government has allocated $200 billion to improve public sector wages, and today’s ceremony reflects that commitment,” said Prime Minister Holness. “This partnership and these housing solutions are tangible outcomes of our efforts to uplift workers and provide them with affordable, sustainable homes.”

As the Union Acres project reaches completion, plans are already underway for further housing developments. In St. James, the NHT will be delivering 3,531 housing solutions, each contributing to a better future for Jamaica’s workers. In a symbolic gesture, all new homeowners at Union Acres will also receive two trees to plant, further underscoring the commitment to environmental sustainability.

Can-Cara Limited’s role in Union Acres underscores the company’s dedication to empowering Jamaicans through home ownership, while setting new standards for sustainable living.
